It has now been ten years since President George W. Bush committed the United States of America to military action in Iraq. That war was a mess in a lot of ways. But so is every other war, pretty much. Like remember these?

Barbary War
The first of many half-assed US incursions into Libyan territory.

War of 1812
Do you even know what happened in this war? There were some trade things and lingering bad feelings from the Revolutionary War, but what was solved? Nothing. Nothing changed. Nothing ever changes.

Hounds of War

This is what it sounds like when people want to start a war. First they talk about how war must be avoided. Diplomacy is the preference, they say, but nothing is off the table. Then it’s an international assistance force, there to back up our allies. Then, while we are doing it, we realize what we’re in the middle of and a war has happened.

Florida and the Machine

Florida should not be a state with a coveted early primary date. It’s not even a state, really — more of a tiny nation, full of small constituencies and voting blocs, none of whom have paid the attention to the long process of politics that makes good, informed voters in the first month of an election year. They haven’t met the candidates, haven’t looked them in the eye at town halls and backyard barbeques or shaken hands to test their grips; just seen them on TV.
